On 1838 he founded The Common School Journal in which he focused and addressed the problems of public schools. His argument about the importance to fight for discipline among the children, and that public education was the best way to provide it, had such success that was soon adopted by many other states, and by the end of 1870 all states had free elementary schools, and by the end of the 1800´s public secondary schools began to exceed in number to private ones.
