According to erikson, if a child fails to resolve a crisis at an early stage, the child is apt to

encounter problems with resolutions of later crises.

Erikson was a psychologist who developed the theory of various stages in psychosocial development in the 1960s. 

The stages of psychosocial development are included in the attached image. 

Erikson claimed that when children fail to resolve crises in the first few stages of development- due to negligent, harsh or abusive parents and negative environments- they are unable to deal with crises as adults. As adults, they are frequently anxious, insecure and mistrustful of people, often encountering problems in their relationships.
