The ability to perceive a color needs interaction with at least two of the photoreceptors. If these three colors are combined, we can basically form any kind of color in the spectrum.  

After 70 years of the proposal for trichromatic theory, the identification of the three receptors did not occur. Researchers also found that cone pigments have different levels of absorption.
