Studies show that smoking in pregnancy can contribute to the sudden death syndrome of the baby, as well as causing important changes in the development of the fetal nervous system. Economic estimates indicate that the costs of perinatal complications are 66% higher for mothers who smoked during pregnancy than for non-smokers.
