The whole brain is active to some degree during sleep but it is the limbic system, or middle brain, which is most responsible for the emotional content of our dreams. Within the limbic system it is the amygdala, which is the part of the brain most responsible for the stimulation of fear, that is most active during dreams and is responsible for the most vivid sensations of fear and anxiety experienced while dreaming.
