Lithium can significally reduce the risk of suicide among people with bipolar disorder.  Many patients respond well to lower dosages during maintenance or prophylactic lithium therapy. It also helps prevent future manic episodes. Lithium is the first-line therapy for bipolar disorder, and DGKH is a crucial part of a lithium-sensitive pathway. Other research has focused on abnormal circadian genes that may result in a superfast biological clock, which manifests itself in extreme insomnia.
