Why do costly and elaborate displays by males persist despite the possibility that it makes the male more vulnerable to attack by predators?

Costly and elaborate displays from the male population continue to happen in spite of the fact that it makes them vulnerable by attackers since such displays send signs to the female population that they possess good genes which make it more likely for them to reproduce successfully.
