How can creation myths influence how the history of the world or a society is viewed?

Let's take Europe in 17th century as an example. The creation myth was the one given by the (Catholic) Church. It influenced people because they believed they have to convert the indigenous people everywhere and they felt it gave them a moral right to conquer other countries.
