The troposphere is a dynamic, changing environment. It affects our daily lives, where we live and how we survive. Let’s find stories that demonstrate the influence the atmosphere in our world. Task #1

Be on the lookout for an article in your local newspaper that deals with an issue directly or indirectly related to Earth's Atmosphere. For example, in this unit you are going to be learning about the atmosphere and the weather. You may use the actual newspaper or open the web site for your local paper. Once there, search the past week or month of articles using terms such as “weather,” “atmosphere,” “storms” and “air pollution.”

After you locate the article, you will need to call someone from a local agency or someone who is involved with the issue. For example, you could locate an article on how severe storms are affecting the area and speak to an insurance agent about the possible impact that severe storms have on the state. A great person to call, if you find an article on air pollution, would be a local car dealership that sells “green” cars. Your county emergency management center is always a good resource. Do you have a family member who works in a hospital, is a realtor, a fireman, a policeman or works in construction? All of these jobs require reactions to the weather. Share your article with them and then tell us what they had to say about the story.

Task #2

Post and Respond

Post what you have learned on the discussion board:

Name
Local Issue
Write a paragraph explaining the main ideas discussed in the article and what you learned using specific examples from the article. Be sure to write a second paragraph sharing what was discussed with the community member. What did they have to say about the article?
Read and respond to the postings of two other students on the discussion board. Comment on their issue and how yours is, or is not, related to it.
What to Submit:

In the student comment area of the assessment indicate:

The name of the article, the name of the newspaper where it appeared, and the date it appeared.
The name and position of the person you contacted.
The date you posted your information on the discussion board.
The names of students to whose articles on the discussion board you responded.
