Assessment Prominent Americans wrote essays and gave speeches to support their positions. You will now follow their example by writing and editing your own persuasive
argument either for or against ratifying the Constitution. You will find it helpful to complete this Activity on Argument Writing before you begin.
Steps
1. Review the lesson to make sure you understand the main points of the Federalists and Anti-Federalists. Examine these quotes, which you will use in the
assignment. Choose to side with either the Federalists or Anti-Federalists. Can't decide?
2. Write a newspaper article to convince people to agree with your position. You may use this template. Be sure to include the following in your article:
1. introductory paragraph that clearly states your position on ratifying the Constitution, as a Federalist or Anti-Federalist
2. second paragraph that explains your point of view on how the government is set up under the Constitution
3. Third paragraph that explains your point of view on including of a bill of rights-use at least one quote to support your
argument. Be sure to explain what the quote means and how it connects to your point.
4. Fourth paragraph to explain why you disagree with the opposing position. For example, if you are writing as a Federalist,
you will explain why you disagree with the Anti-Federalist stance. Use at least one new quote to explain why it is not a valid
point or how it supports your position.
