However they’re defined, if the question is whether any society today exhibits perfect equality or perfect justice, I think the answer would have to be no. These things remain ideals.

As for whether some societies embody more equality and more justice than others, I think that’s certainly true. And, as a general trend in the West, these qualities have been on the increase for the last few centuries. However, societies can move backward here as well as forward.

But it’s important to bear in mind that, as long as there is no consensus on the exact meanings of these terms, there is no way to determine how fully they are expressed in a society.
