Julius Caesar (c 100 - 44 BCE) was born into one of Rome's patrician families, although from early on he identified with the Populares - the party of the plebeians (the common
people).
He became a military tribune before he was 30 years old and was a quaestor (Roman
official or magistrate) in Spain by 69 BCE.
Caesar proved to be a great military leader. He won victories in the Gallic Wars in Gaul -
now France and Belgium. In 47 BCE Caesar led an army against an enemy near the Black
Sea - now part of Turkey. His military campaign there was so swift and decisive that he
reported his victory with the words “Veni, vidi, vici” - “I came, I saw, I conquered”.
Within three years Caesar had consolidated power in Rome and was appointed dictator
for life by the Senate.
What does Caesar's statement (Veni, vidi, vici) tell you about the kind of person Caesar
was?
