There was a huge debate in the North about how to treat the South after winning the war. Lincoln and his successor Andrew Johnson, wanted to be lenient and forgiving on the South. The Radical Republicans wanted to punish the rebel leaders, take the land away from the plantation class and ensure equality for former slaves by using force with the army. The right apporach to reconstruction was the Radical Republicans approach because the South had to be thought a lesson and they had to realize that their behavior was wrong.
