The soldiers of the Massachusetts 54th knew they are being sent on a very dangerous mission to lead the charge on Fort Wagner. Most of them are unlikely to survive. It is customary for soldiers to write “goodbye” letters home before entering a battle zone, but most of them can’t read or write, yet they find a way to “say their peace” or their collective farewell.
