Functionalism, is the school of psychology, founded by William James, that probed the functions and purposes of the mind and behavior in the individual's adaptation to the environment. It is about the “why” of the mind. James saw the mind as flexible and fluid, characterized by constant change in response to a continuous flow of information from the world where he called the stream of consciousness. Functionalism are central to the ideas that mental associations allow us to benefit from experience, every time we repeat something our nervous systems are changed, and psychology should use subjective introspection to study every day, true-to- life experiences.
