The Great Compromise occurred in 1787 over the debate about how states should be represented. Smaller states thought that this was unfair and demanded that both houses have completely equal representation for all states. This disagreement was so heated that it threatened to destroy the Constitution before it was created.

The Great Compromise occurred on July 16, 1787, and it was proposed by Connecticut representative Roger Sherman. It proposed that the legislature have two houses. The House of Representative would appease larger states by giving more representatives for states that had larger populations. The second house, the Senate, would give equal representation to all states by giving each state exactly 2 senators. This agreement became known as the Great Compromise, and it is what allowed creation of the Constitution to move forward despite a disagreement that threatened to make representatives from large states and small states leave table.
