The Anaconda Plan was a proposal established by General Winfield Scott. The proposal, was for the US forces to defeat the Confederate Army by systematically isolating and cutting off the South's logistical network and its export routes. The proposed plan will be accomplished and carried out through the pilliging, killing, and destruction of all Southern infrastructure and troops that laid in sight of the Union Army. The plan also proposed a large naval blockade to block the Souths ability to trade and commerce while sending 60,000 troops to secure and capture Southern ports and towns until Union reinforcements arrived to capture the rest of the CSA's (Confederate States of America's) territory.

The Union Blockade occurred just after the Civil War began. On April 19, 1861, Abraham Lincoln made the announcement public. Throughout the Civil War, the Union maintained a blockade of the South until the war concluded in 1865. Its Union blockade was part of the Anaconda Plan, a bigger project. Union General Scott was the mastermind behind the Anaconda Plan. General Scott believed that the conflict would go on for a long time and that the forces with the strongest supplies would prevail. He decided to prevent foreign powers from supplying the Confederates with supplies. The scheme was dubbed the Anaconda Plan because the Union intended to encircle the South like a serpent. They'd form a ring along the southern frontier to keep supplies out. The army then would start dividing the South and reclaim control of the Mississippi River. Many citizens felt the blockade was pointless at the onset of the Civil War. They believed the war would end quickly and that the blockade would significantly affect the South. People in the South were suffering from a shortage of supplies, and the economy as a whole had slowed to a crawl.
