Building a Scratching Post for Cats
Are your indoor cats ripping your couch or favorite chair to shreds? Perhaps they need a scratching post to use instead of your furniture. Scratching posts are easy to build and take very little time to construct. The instructions for building a simple post are below. Use the design as a guide. You can modify this design to allow for a larger base and a higher post if desired.

Directions:
Before you begin, gather all materials. The center post probably will be the most difficult piece to find. If the post you use is higher than 34 inches, be sure to use a larger base.
The base must be sturdy enough to support the post without tipping.
Staple or nail one end of the sisal rope to the top of your post. Wind the rope tightly around the post, leaving no space between rows. Staple or nail the other end of the rope to the bottom of the post.
If you have decided to cover the base in carpet, do so now. Tuck the ends of the carpet under the base and staple them to the base. If desired, cut the carpet ends to prevent overlap.
Attach the post to the center of the base. Hammer the nails from the bottom of the base into the bottom of the post. Use several nails so the base is attached firmly.
