Which country has had the greatest impact on the U. S.?

Britain is a pretty obvious answer, and France is another good one. I’d like to offer Spain as a thoroughly under-recognized influence on the US throughout its history, though. This country would in no way be the same without Spain.

Spanish British relations were one of the most important political/social/religious issues at the time of America’s founding.

The British war with Spain caused the kind of poverty and lack of opportunity that drove those early settlers to America.

Spain was the great fear of many early colonists, to the point that Britain actually attempted to keep Virginia a secret from Spain.

Through the vast majority of America’s history, Spanish colonies were the ones near to the US. Spain was THE other great New World Power, even as recently as the 1890s. They were effectively our neighbor - our big, scary neighbor who we never quite understood and who could have wiped us off the face of the planet for the majority of our history.

Cuba. We are still dealing with the issue of Cuba today, and those issues stemmed from Spanish involvement on the island.
