Lyme Disease and the Ticks That Spread It
Lyme disease is an infection caused by bacteria. Deer ticks and western black-legged ticks spread the bacteria. Cases of this disease have been reported in 47 states of the United States. The most likely victims are people who spend time in areas with woods or overgrown bushes. This disease is difficult to diagnose, but the first sign is usually a red rash at the spot where the bite occurred. The disease responds well to treatment with antibiotics. If it goes untreated, it can result in paralyzed muscles, inflamed joints and nerve and heart problems.
