Below are 3 different scenarios that involve shifts in populations. Your job is to read each scenario and complete the list questions (a – c) for each scenario. Scenario #4: A major hurricane has struck the large city of Tuscaloosa. Of its 4 major suburbs, 2 suffered dramatic damage to their power grids (power grids provide electricity to homes and businesses). Most homes and other buildings survived the storm, but are without electricity and running water.

How might the population levels in the 2 suburbs hit by the storm change, as a result of the loss of electricity and water? Could the population levels of those suburbs remain stable?
What types of challenges might the town face as a result of the shift (or lack of shift) in their population?
What sort of solutions could the town implement to address the potential challenges?

Scenario #5: A new company has opened in the small and isolated town of Versalles. The town is located in a very rural and impoverished area of the country, where there are few good paying jobs. When company first opened, it advertised throughout Versalles (including a 500 mile radius around the town) that it was hiring 1,000 new employees and would be paying employees higher wages than any other company in the state. 100,000 hopeful job seekers descend on the town within a week of the advertisements, bringing their families with them.

How might the population level in Versalles be affected as a result of the company opening?
What types of challenges might the town face as a result of the shift in their population?
What sort of solutions could the town implement to address the potential challenges?

Scenario #6: In the small country of Calvert, there are two major ethnic groups – the Dannies and the Bonnies. Due to religious differences, the two groups have not gotten along. For centuries, they have fought, each side believing that they are better than the other. Recently, the Bonnies have taken control and passed unfair restrictions on the Dannies – not allowing them to have good paying jobs, making it illegal for Dannie children to attend school, and other harmful laws. The Dannies fear violence if they fight the new laws. The nearby country of Paduke has a large population of Dannies that enjoy total freedom and equality.

How might the population of Dannies react to the new laws in Calvert?
What types of challenges might the country, and its neighbors, face as a result of the shifts in their population?
What sort of solutions could each country implement to address the potential challenges?
