Why was the Emancipation Proclamation significant to the Union?

From the first day of civil War, slaves had acted ti secure their own liberty. The Emanicipation Proclamation confirmed their insistence that the war for the Union must become a war for Freedom. It added moral force to the Union cause and strengthended the Union both militarily and politically.
