Summarize this passage using (Ali, conflict, Sunni, shi'a, Civil war) Today there are more than 1.5 billion Muslims worldwide. The followers of Islam all agree on the Five Pillars and follow the teachings in the Holy Quran
(Koran). Today, Sunnis make up about 85 percent of the world's Muslims. The
remaining 15% are Shi'a Muslims. Shi'a Muslims primarily live in Iran and Iraq
while the Sunni live in the rest of the Middle East and North Africa.
Muhammad, the founder of Islam, died in 632 CE. He did not name a
someone to take his place. This led to turmoil and conflict that exists still today
over who should lead the Muslim world. Abu Bakr, Muhammad's friend, became
the caliph, or leader, after Muhammad died. Abu Bakr had many conquests and
spread Islam to other parts of the Middle East. Ali Abi Talib, Muhammad's cousin
and brother in law, took over after Abu Bakr. This led to civil war. The Sunni's
believe that they should follow an elected leader while Shi'a believe that only
members of Muhammad's family should be in charge.
This conflict is hundreds of years old regarding who should be leader of
the Muslim world. Such conflict can be seen in Iraq, Yemen, and Syria today. This
conflict continues to impact the faith and fate of millions of Muslims.
