The Grandfather Clauses meant that African Americans could not vote because they could only vote if their grandfather voted. The Grandfather Clause was one way African Americans could get past the the literacy test. They had to take a literacy test to see if they were “educated enough” to vote. These tests were often times impossible to get past. People also used the Grandfather Clause to make it more “fair”. Often times, African Americans could not get past the literacy test and actually vote.
