Georgia, Supreme Court Chief Justice John Marshall ruled that the Cherokee were a sovereign nation not subject to US federal or state laws. state of Georgia had a right to forcibly remove the Cherokee from their land. state of Georgia had authority over the affairs of American Indians within its borders. Cherokee had to be paid by Georgia for the rights to their homeland.
