During the French Revolution Napoleon Bonaparte rose to fame among the French people by
defeating the Royalists (French people that wanted the absolute monarchy back) and defeating
in battle the European nations that were attacking France. Napoleon became a hero and the
people of France, tired of invasion, civil war, revolution and the horrors of the Reign of Terror
under Maximilien Robespierre, turned to Napoleon for leadership. Shortly after gaining the
support of the people of France, Napoleon crowned himself emperor.
What were the historical circumstances (causes) of Napoleon's rise to power? Why did the
people support him?
Napoleon became a hero by defeating Frances enemies. He was a hero to them and they
supported him. He used that support to declare himself emperor.
