the British did not suffer the hardships the Indians faced.

Explanation:

The great famine in India which lasted from 1876–1878 killed around 8 million Indians, a death toll that would have been less if the British administrators had not been so selfish with resources.

Not only did the British offer little famine relief, they also kept exporting wheat to Britain from the affected areas whilst the famine was ongoing. Indeed from the illustration attached, you can see the British were fairing better than the Indians as the Indians in the picture are almost skeleton like yet the British administrator to the top left looks well fed and energetic.
