Albert Bandura is one of the most well-known social psychologists who advanced this perspective as part of his social learning theory. In this model, individuals learn by watching the behaviors of others and the consequences that result. They subsequently use this information to guide their future actions.  An example of applied SCT (social cognitive theory) is the idea that for someone to quit smoking they may learn better from an ex-smoker and encounter more success because they share experiences and there is specific knowledge from that first-hand experience that may resonate better with the smoker who is looking to quit.
