This quote is taken from a message President Theodore Roosevelt delivered to Congress in 1903. He was explaining that the law applies to everyone including corporations and labor unions and not just individuals. This was a time in history where the corporations had built a lot of power and were using their influence to try to circumvent laws, these large corporations were called trusts and Roosevelt believed that their monopoly on power could hurt the public interest. He believed that where the Federal Government had jurisdiction it should stop the misconduct.
