The Revolutionary War was in terms "Revolutionary" because of the outcry for independence from the colonies after the French and Indian War. The outrage and rebellion caused by the colonists raged a fierce war with one of Earth's oldest known superpowers, Great Britain. It looked impossible, and to defeat the British(and being once their colonies even added to the shock factor) as farmers with shotguns in the first rebellion, it was something that European countries watching, and thinking. The Revolutionary War was so revolutionary because of how the feeling of wanted freedom and union grew in the colonists, and how they were going to do something about it.
