From my evaluations i can depict that the prisoners were forced to give up their children upon arrival, or that the prisoners are constantly being replaced, with the new ones shoveling the old ones into an unknown fate. in the background i can see a large amount of people who will also be shoved into that pit. i can tell this because some of them are children, and the other people in that group are most likely mothers watching their children get murdered, war is cruel.
