Human beings are dependent on 2 percent of Earth’s total water resources. This is because only 2 percent of Earth’s water is freshwater. The rest is salty seawater that can’t be used for drinking or washing. But if we find an efficient way to convert salt water into freshwater, it will open up all the water for human use. For the past two years I have been working on a desalination system called Fresh Marine Water (FMW) that converts seawater to drinking water. I believe desalination is the answer to the world’s water woes.

I know that detractors disapprove of desalination for its high costs, high energy consumption, and adverse environmental impact. However, FMW has all the merits of existing desalination systems and none of the drawbacks. It does not release harmful chemicals after processing. It does not harm marine flora and fauna in any way. And, it is extremely energy efficient. By bringing down the cost of desalination, FMW would make it possible to bring desalinated water to regions that are far away from the ocean.

I request a grant of $10,000 to complete the development of the FMW system. Once the system is developed, it can be marketed to governments around the world. My goal is to make the system affordable for poor and developing countries. By funding this project, you’ll help solve one of the biggest problems facing our world today.
