Take a minute and think about this. We use the census to determine each state's total population. Those are living, breathing humans of all ages. They are NOT NECESSARILY registered voters, adults, legal citizens, etc. Our government awards the greatest number of congressional representatives to the most populated states and they subsequently get the most electoral votes (Voting power in the Presidential Election). Back in the colonial times, slaves were counted as 3/5's of a person, simply to increase Southern States' power in the presidential election. Remember, they couldn't vote, own land, work, etc. They were just bodies and technically the laws didn't apply to them because they were not considered citizens, but property. Question: Is this fair? Give a well thought out answer please. I am looking to hear your thoughts on the matter. A simple yes or no will not be sufficient to earn extra credit.
