Columbus Day didn’t actually become a federal holiday until 1968, although there were celebrations of Columbus as far back as 1792 (sponsored by the Tammany Society in NYC). President Harrison declared a one-time observation on 12 October 1892, partly in response to the lynching of 11 Italian-Americans in New Orleans. Although a 1934 law pushed by the Knights of Columbus called for the POTUS to issue a proclamation for the observance of Columbus Day, it wasn’t until 1966 that the National Columbus Day Committee was founded in Buffalo, NY, and got it on the calendar in 1968.

Mostly, Columbus Day represents a celebration of Italian-American heritage, just as St. Patrick’s Day celebrates Irish-American roots. IMHO, Columbus just isn’t a very good representative.
