United States President Abraham Lincoln said it two hundred years ago, and I agree with him.

The purpose of government is to serve the people and create the kinds of laws and legislation that establish internal peace, protect the citizens, and create the economic and political conditions for the people to prosper.

The presidency of Lincoln had its challenges during a tumultuous time where the country was divided through the issue of slavery and faced a civil war.  Despite the difficult conditions, Lincoln always had in mind the need for community and to integrate the Confederate states back into the Union. He thought that the rights of individuals were very important and that is why after the Civil War, he ordered a period of Reconstruction in the South that respected the rights of the African Americans.
