Someone, please help me I don't get it PROJECT: CREATE A TOPOGRAPHIC MAP OBJECTIVES
Create a topographic map of an area. Now that you are familiar with how to read a topographic map, you should be able to create one of your own! When designing your map, remember the following points: Contour lines are brown in color and do not cross. They are drawn to indicate the shape of a geological structure. Every contour line's elevation shouldn't be labeled. Good practice is to darken and label every fifth line. To create a steep slope, contour lines should be drawn close together; for a gradual slope, contour lines should be drawn far apart. Contour lines make a V shape when in contact with a river or stream. The point of the V points upstream. Materials Pencil Crayons or colored pencils Paper Directions Choose a geographic area for which you will create a topographic map. You can use one of the photos (photos A-E) below or find one of your own. If you find your own photo, include a copy of it with your map. Remember, your map is an overhead view of the area you are mapping. Imagine you are an eagle looking down on the land from far above! For the photos below, you do not know the actual height of the lowest elevation. You can assume it is 0, or whatever other base elevation you would like to begin at. You also must estimate changes in elevation, since you do not know the actual height of features in the pictures. Some of the photos stretch out great distances in the background. You should just map an interesting portion of the photo that has elevation changes. For your map, you will need to include the following: Title: Make up a title for your map. Include the letter of the photo you are representing (e. g., Photo A: Gilligan's Plateau), if applicable. Compass: Include a compass on your map indicating which way are north, south, east, and west. Remember that north is usually toward the top of a map. For the photos below, you can assume that you are looking north, since the photos do not provide a compass direction. Contour Interval: Indicate what the contour interval is for your map. Contour lines: In brown, draw contour lines that describe the shape and steepness of geological features in your photo. You may need to assume the full shape of geological structures, as you may only see one side of them in your photo. Bodies of water: In blue, color or draw any bodies of water, if applicable. Indicate the flow of river channels or creeks with V-shaped contour lines where the river intersects the lines. Peaks: If you do not know exact elevations, estimate the highest points of the peaks of geological features. Include elevations for every fifth contour line as well. You can estimate elevations for features and then place contour lines based on your estimates. Draw your map. To submit your drawing online, use the upload tool provided below.
