(including former slaves and Native Americans) assuring them equal protections under the law.
C. The 15 th amendment guarantees all African American men the right to vote.
D. Before the war, people still thought of themselves as more from their state than their country,
but after the war, people consider themselves more from the country than the state and as a
result, the federal government grows and continues to grow up until the 1970s becoming much
more powerful than the state governments.
E. The North became very industrialized (lots of factories and railroads) This made us an industrial
behemoth (look it up!) and ushered us into something called The Gilded Age (which you will
study about in HS). We became the premier industrial and political power for a long time.
F. Because of the war, women found their roles in society growing. Many women, especially in the
North, became nurses. With so many men off to war, many women had to take over the family
farms and even the family plantations in the South. They would still not get the right to vote
until 1920, though (hundred-year anniversary of the 19 th amendment coming up in August!).
