Positive consequences

The problem of the explosion of the population of the U.S  in the 19th century was tackled by westward expansion where surplus land and new opportunities helped them to prosper.

Negative consequences

The theory was used to justify the forced displacement of native Americans and other communities from their homes. The rapid growth of the United States also exacerbated the problem of slavery.
