Russian politics takes place in the framework of the semi-republic of Russia. According to the Russian Constitution, the President of Russia is the head of state, as well as the multi-party system of executive power used by the government, headed by the Prime Minister, appointed by the President with the approval of parliament. The legislative power is vested in both houses of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation, while the President and the government have passed many legally binding laws.

Since the collapse of the Soviet Union in late 1991, Russia has seen great challenges in its attempts to formulate a political system to follow the seventy-five years of Soviet rule. For example, leading figures in the legislative and administrative branches have expressed conflicting views on the political direction with Russia and the government instruments that should be used to follow. The conflict culminated in September and October 1993, when President Boris Yeltsin used troops to dissolve parliament and called for new legislative elections (see the challenge of the Russian constitution of 1993). The event marked the end of the first Russian legal era, defined by a state constitution that had been adopted by the Soviet Union of the Russian Soviet Federation Socialist Republic in 1978. The new constitution, which created a strong presidency, was approved by a referendum in December. 1993.

With the new constitution and the new parliament representing different parties and parties, the Russian political structure showed signs of resilience. As the transition period peaked in the mid-1990s, the power of the national government continued to increase as Russian provinces gained political and economic harmony in Moscow. Although the struggle between the executive and legislative branches has been partially resolved by the new constitution, both branches continue to represent ideas that challenge Russia's future. Most of the time, the mayor was the center of change, and the lower house of parliament, the State Duma, was a communist official and a state.
