Nearly 250 years ago, British colonists living in
North America became angry with a king
who imposed more and more taxes but gave
the colonists little political representation. The
colonists were frustrated by their lack of
political rights and discouraged by their lack
of freedom. This treatment at the hands of a
distant ruler led them to break away and
form their own nationâthe United States of
America. This new nation became a symbol
of democracy, a system of government
where the people rule.
Under what conditions do you think it is
permissible for citizens to form a new
government? What are some qualities that
an ideal government should have? Why?
