The theory of evolution is controversial among some people, but not among scientists.
Lots and lots of evidence support this theory. Some of the strongest evidence comes from
the fossils of other hominids -human-like skulls, for example, have been found on many
continents, revealing that we didn't always look the way we look now. We can also see why
we evolved the way we did. For instance, humans (and other great apes) didn't grow thumbs
because we thought they'd make it easier to pick things up. Instead, a series of likely
hundreds of slight mutations moved the thumb to its current place because those animals
with opposable thumbs were better able to survive and reproduce. That's what evolution is
all about: tiny changes in organisms of a species over a huge amount of time.
