The African slaves often forced to do extremely hard work without any pay. To help them get through the day, many of them started to create some sort of song or anthem that they can hum or sing as they give their labor to the plantation.

But that's not it's only used.

There were a couple of instances when the slaves started to send messages for one another by disguising it as a lyric within the songs. This allowed them to  trade information and  share secrets about escaping to freedom.
