Legitimate power refers to a type of power that is acquired after receiving high hierarchical position in a certain organization.  In Business, legitimate power will be held by Managers to their subordinates.

People who have hierarchical power have the ability to 'Force' the people below them to obey a certain action. They can impose punishment to those who disregard the these orders / directions

This is why in the example above, the subordinates feel obligated to follow Ian's order, even though they do not necessarily have any form of personal relationship.
