The country of Sudan is located in the -Central part of Africa. It became an independent country in 1956 after over 50 years of colonial rule. When this happened, long-existing tensions between parts of the country were enflamed. The southern portion of the country was predominantly African and practiced , while the northern portion were mostly Arab and .
