The defenses of the body protect against many different types of pathogens. For this reason, they are also referred to as the defenses. These defenses include mechanical and chemical barriers, cells that are able to lyse cell membranes of pathogens, and the process of during which redness and swelling can occur as the tissue responds to injury or invading pathogens.
