In the past, humans have treated natural resources as if they were an infinite source of wealth and commodity; However, now that we know that there are limits to non-renewable resources. Many new organizations have been created in an effort to find a new strategy for preserving limited resources by doing things like paying people for recycling scrap metal that would otherwise be tossed into a trash-heap and buried.

Most people may say that this only applies to non-renewable resources; However, the reality of now versus then is that even renewable resources like water are beginning to become limited in some regions. For example, the people of Texas can get water by turning on the tap(aka faucet), but that does not mean they can drink it as "Lead, radiation, and arsenic are among the top pollutants, partly due to old pipes and water systems, and partly because of contamination spills directly into waterways."
