sequoyah was born in approximately 1770 in what is now the state of tennessee . he was born into society and trained to become a silversmith at an early age. because of this, he had many dealings with white settlers in the area, and he noticed they had a system of writing. he often referred to this as and saw this ability to communicate through a written form as an enormous advantage for the settlers. he believed his people needed a similar advantage, so in the 1810s he began working on a writing system that would represent the sounds he and his society spoke.
