Differential susceptibility  in development states that some children (and adults too) are more open than others to the environment for better and worse. This means that some children are more vulnerable to developing negatively in a bad environment, but these same children could flourish in an ideal environment. We call these environmentally sensitive children, compared to those who are most indifferent to the quality of the environment, for example, the way their parents, teachers and friends act.
