Following the french and indian war, great britain imposed new taxes on their colonists living in north america in order to pay for the war debt. between 1763 and 1774 the british government imposed several new taxes to pay for the war. the british also put several acts into place that limited the expansion of colonial territory and trade. by 1775, even colonists who were loyal british citizens, were meeting to discuss declaring independence from british rule and establishing a new country.
