Suppose tamika looks up a number in the telephone book. after getting a busy signal, a minute or so later she tries to call again-but has already forgotten the number! this example illustrates the limited duration of memory.

short-term memory only able to held small amount of information within a short period of time. For most people, all new information fall into this category (especially if the information does not held meaning or importance to us).

In order to move it to long term memory, people need internalize that memory overtime by either relieving it over and over again or by giving some sort of meaning to that memory.
